Aramco is seeking a Process Simulation & Reactor Modeling Expert to join the Research Support Division (RSD) of our Research & Development Center (R&DC).  The Research Support Division is responsible for providing quality support to researchers in a timely and cost-effective manner.  Within the RSD, the Pilot Plant Engineering & Operations Unit owns pilot plant (PP) facilities and process modeling, as well as simulation and scale-up competences which support research, technology development and specialized technical services.


The Process Simulation & Reactor Modeling Expert is a technical authority in simulation and modelling who develops detailed process simulations, reaction kinetics, and reactor models to provide detailed technical insight and guidance to R&D programs; as well as performance improvement/troubleshooting of plant operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • (i) Refineries and petrochemicals flowsheeting: maximize the value of the models in terms of quality thermodynamics basic properties/data – for R&D purposes and to ensure a full coverage of quality models for all refinery/petrochemical plants; build and validate high fidelity flowsheeting models for existing assets; monitor/improve complex unit operation / troubleshoot equipment and process underperformance, develop corresponding model supported solutions; develop capabilities related to simulations, train new recruits, implement best practices and bring uniformity in simulations; audit simulation files generated by sites or third parties.
  • (ii) Refinery unit modelling: configuration design, LP planning/scheduling and economic optimization: e.g. supports the development and maintains the refinery unit operation models, validates Base + Delta vectors at unit operation and overall economics/optimum at refinery level, supports the generation of refinery configuration options of the future.
  • (iii) Reactor & kinetic modelling, fluid flow and CFD: support the development of kinetic models for the refinery and petrochemical plants, tracks and assessed the benefits of the potential adoption of new modelling tools and techniques by connecting to leading simulation teams / companies in the world. Finally, he/she supports the CFD experts, who have a strong track record of troubleshooting complex issues in plants and/or of developing improved designs of internals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with major reactor design and engineering knowledge providers for technical collaboration.
  • Has frequent independent contact with various levels of management in R&D, manufacturing and business, and is expected to build networks of excellence with:  outside knowledge centers, institutes, research centers, innovation councils, private organizations, etc.; and internal functions and groups to create and deploy the portfolio of validated models.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering degree. PhD is strongly preferred.
  • At least 12 years of experience in process simulation, kinetics and reactor modeling.
  • Has an exceptional level of knowledge in the fundamentals of process simulation and modelling in the oil and gas, centered on three main domains: (i) steady state and dynamic plants simulation (e.g. flowsheeting) and process development, (ii) refinery/petrochemicals planning and economic optimization of their integration and (iii) development of (advanced) kinetic/mass transfer reactor models.
  • Strong track record of developing models for kinetics development, catalyst shaping and sizing, and reactor models for design of pilot plants and reactor scaleup to commercial dimensions.
  • Excellent track record of scaling up a range of reactor types; and  designing and developing novel reactor features and design, using state of the art modeling techniques.
  • Reactor modeling expertise using Equation Oriented (EO) tools, such as Aspen Custom Modeler or gPROMS, and applying them for new reactor configuration development and scaleup of processes, from laboratory to commercial scale.
  • Must be highly-proficient in:  using commercial process simulation tools like Aspen Plus, HYSYS, PetroSIM etc., especially in their kinetic reactor models suite; and applying those tools to develop new process configurations.
  • Proven track record of collating operational data from laboratory and commercial units, and applying it for scaling up performance of catalysts at laboratory and pilot plants to commercial operations.
  • Must have strong understanding, and preferably working knowledge, of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools in order to address scaleup challenges related to potential fluid dynamics patterns in large units.
  • Strong track record of modelling and supporting disciplines such as planning and scheduling, asset planning, APC and RTO, by developing and implementing models for refinery and petrochemical units.
