Overview

We are seeking an Architect to join the Engineering & Design Division of the Community Services Technical Support Department.

The Engineering & Design Division provides multidisciplinary engineering, architectural and technical services in support of Community Services facilities and programs, including the assessment, planning, design, renovation, enhancement and construction support of residential, recreational, administrative, educational, public-use and support facilities.

The Senior Community Facilities Engineer – Architectural provides senior-level architectural and technical expertise for the assessment, planning, design, renovation and enhancement of Community Services facilities. The role supports multidisciplinary coordination, code and standards compliance, value engineering, constructability, construction support and the delivery of sustainable, resilient and human-centered facilities. The role also promotes resource efficiency, low-carbon and circular economy principles, accessibility, placemaking, public realm quality and lifecycle performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will be required to perform the following:

• Provide senior architectural engineering expertise for new construction, renovations, expansions, rehabilitation and enhancement of Community Services facilities from initial assessment and planning through design development, construction and closeout.
• Perform architectural assessments of existing facilities to evaluate condition, functionality, code compliance, accessibility, building performance and suitability for current and future operational requirements, and develop technically sound improvement strategies.
• Develop architectural concepts, space programs, planning criteria, design requirements and technical solutions that respond to proponent needs while optimizing functionality, user experience, operational efficiency, maintainability and lifecycle value.
• Review architectural studies, drawings, specifications, calculations, material selections and design packages at various stages of development to verify technical adequacy, completeness, constructability and compliance with applicable Company requirements, building codes and recognized international standards.
• Lead resolution of complex architectural and facility-related technical issues and develop recommendations considering safety, functionality, aesthetics, constructability, cost, schedule, sustainability, maintainability, resilience and long-term facility performance.
• Coordinate architectural requirements with structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, interior design, landscape and other disciplines to achieve fully integrated multidisciplinary design solutions.
• Perform design optimization, value engineering and constructability reviews to identify opportunities for cost avoidance, improved performance, reduced execution risk and effective utilization of existing facilities and infrastructure.
• Apply sustainable and climate-responsive design principles to improve energy and resource efficiency, reduce environmental impact and support low-carbon and net-zero objectives where technically and economically practical.
• Incorporate circular economy principles through efficient use of materials, adaptive reuse, durability, flexibility, waste reduction and lifecycle considerations in facility planning and design.
• Promote human-centered design, accessibility, placemaking and high-quality public realm principles to improve usability, comfort, inclusivity and overall community experience.
• Evaluate emerging global trends, technologies, materials and best practices related to sustainability, decarbonization, resilience, smart buildings and future-ready community facilities, and recommend appropriate applications.
• Provide architectural technical support during construction, including review of technical submittals and field conditions, evaluation of proposed design changes, resolution of site-related technical issues and verification that implemented solutions maintain approved design intent.
• Assess deviations, nonconformances and unforeseen site conditions and develop appropriate architectural corrective solutions while protecting project quality, schedule and operational requirements.
• Provide technical consultation to Community Services organizations and management on facility development, renovation strategies, architectural standards, design alternatives and complex building-related matters.
• Develop and contribute to architectural guidelines, design criteria, standard details, technical practices and other engineering tools that promote consistency, quality, sustainability and effective governance across Community Services facilities.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced architects and engineers and contribute to the development and transfer of architectural knowledge within the organization.

Minimum Requirements

•    As the successful candidate you will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering from a recognized and approved program. An advanced degree in a related discipline is preferred.
•    You will have fifteen years of experience in architectural design, engineering and development of building and community facility projects, including at least five years in a senior technical role involving complex multidisciplinary facilities. In addition, you will demonstrate the following:
•    Extensive knowledge of architectural planning, building design, space programming, building envelope systems, materials and finishes, accessibility, life safety, sustainability, facility renovation and adaptive reuse.
•    Strong knowledge of applicable building codes, accessibility requirements, industry standards and recognized architectural design practices.
•    Demonstrated experience in evaluating existing facilities, identifying deficiencies and technical risks, and developing recommendations for rehabilitation, renovation, expansion, replacement or new construction.
•    Demonstrated experience in reviewing architectural design packages at various stages of development and resolving interdisciplinary design interfaces with structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, interior design, landscape and other engineering disciplines.
•    Experience in value engineering, constructability reviews, design optimization and development of cost-effective technical solutions without compromising safety, functionality, quality or regulatory compliance.
•    Knowledge of sustainable and resilient design principles, including resource efficiency, low-carbon design, lifecycle performance, circular economy principles, climate-responsive design and strategies supporting net-zero energy objectives where practical.
•    Understanding of human-centered design, placemaking, public realm quality, accessibility and user experience in the planning and development of community facilities.
•    Ability to provide technical consultation to management, operating organizations, project teams, consultants and contractors and to communicate complex architectural matters clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports, design recommendations and management presentations.
•    Knowledge and practical experience with Building Information Modeling, computer-aided design and architectural design and visualization tools is preferred.
•    Professional registration or architectural licensure is preferred.
