We are seeking a Petroleum Scientist to join King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Upstream Research Center, a regional center of Saudi Aramco’s Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Center Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC), to lead the design and development of advanced sensing systems for upstream applications. In this position, scientists will apply breakthrough science and technologies to create the next-generation of upstream sensing instruments.These sensors will enable continuous, distributed, and real time monitoring in the challenging surface and subsurface environments. The potential scientist should have working knowledge and experience with research and lab instruments related to physical characterization of solids and fluids, advanced materials for harsh environments, machine learning, and different sensing physics, including photonics/optical, electromagnetic, acoustic, chemical, and mechanical.

Key Responsibilities

You will be required to perform the following:

Perform novel research into the design of advanced sensing systems using an integrated approach that utilize advanced computational methods, simulations and lab experiments. Develop experimental protocols to evaluate sensors performance under harsh environment.

Work in multidisciplinary team to integrate sensors for field use or within existing field systems.

Support automation of different upstream processes and instruments through having experience in data handling, data processing, data analysis, and statistics.

Develop department procedures, methods, and new techniques for upstream Oil & Gas (O&G) research studies, as well as initiate new projects as required by business needs.

Take advantage of professional experience and know how to develop new and alternative methods or products and assess their potential economic impact.

Lead Research & Development (R&D) programs and collaborative research teams across Upstream R&D.

Publish in high-impact journals, present in conferences, and file patent applications. Interact, support in-house customers, and deploy new technologies to the field. Work effectively in a team environment that includes upper management, professional peers, young professionals, technicians and outside vendors, suppliers and contractors.

Must guide young professionals in their technical and career development.

Minimum Requirements

As a successful candidate, you

Hold a Bachelor’s advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or relevant disciplines in Physical sciences. MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or relevant discipline is recommended.

Must have at least five to ten years of experience in industrial development of sensors or related technologies, as well as knowledge of the latest developments in sensing systems and applications for the oil & gas industry, specifically in the areas of surface and downhole multiphase flow metering, LiDARs and spectrometry for extreme environments, gas species fingerprinting, water salinity measurement, pH analysis, fluid rheology, and rock characterization.

Have an outstanding research output supported by technical conference presentations, journal publications, and patents disclosures. Have a strong commitment to safety as well as communication skills to support leading the research team responsible of developing technologies.
